A voucher is a full-price booking that hasn’t picked a date yet
That’s the whole trick. The money lands in your account during the December gifting rush; the visit happens in April, when your calendar has room to spare. No promo code, no discounting — the quiet-season seat gets filled at full price, paid months in advance.
For activity operators the fit is unusually good. An escape room session or a pottery workshop is a hard thing to wrap and an easy thing to gift — Christmas, birthdays, leaving presents, staff rewards. The giver spends more than they would on an object, and the recipient turns up already sold on the experience.
The catch has always been the admin: codes on scraps of paper, balances in a spreadsheet, and an expiry rule that changed under everyone’s feet in March 2026. That’s the part GoodKeen takes off your plate.

They redeem it online
The recipient enters the code at your online checkout — on your hosted booking page or the widget embedded in your own website. If the booking costs less than the balance, partial redemption keeps the rest alive for next time.
The ledger keeps score
Every issue, redemption and refund is recorded per card with a running balance. When a voucher-paid booking is refunded, the value goes back to the card first — so the gift survives a cancelled session.

Worked example — amounts are illustrative. Issued 12 December 2026, so the earliest lawful expiry is 12 December 2029: the 3-year floor is applied automatically at issue. Every movement above appears on the card’s ledger in your dashboard.
The 3-year minimum isn’t a setting here. It’s the floor.
Since 16 March 2026, most gift cards and vouchers sold in New Zealand must stay redeemable for at least 3 years — with penalties up to NZ$10,000 for an individual and NZ$30,000 for an organisation.
In most software, that rule is a settings field — one someone has to find, change, and never accidentally change back. Some booking systems don’t handle gift cards natively at all: Bookwhen has no native gift cards, and its docs point to a third-party workaround.
In GoodKeen the 3-year minimum expiry is hard-coded. You can give a voucher a longer life; you cannot configure one below the legal floor, and anything left blank is raised to it automatically. There’s no compliance checkbox because there’s nothing to get wrong.

Outstanding vouchers are the reason plenty of operators stay on software they’ve outgrown. Someone’s aunt is holding a code from two Christmases ago, and it has to keep working.
