Bookme commission: what it really costs — and when it’s worth it
Bookme delivers real demand — but commission plus deal discounts add up. Here’s how NZ operators use the marketplace for the gaps, and keep full-price bookings coming through their own channel.

First, credit where it’s due
Bookme is a New Zealand deals marketplace for activities and experiences. Locals and visitors browse it looking for something to do — often today or this weekend — and the discounts are the draw. For an operator, that’s a genuine audience you don’t have to build yourself.
Listing there can put your experience in front of people who’ve never heard of you, fill seats that would otherwise go empty, and smooth out quiet midweek sessions. None of that is in dispute — plenty of NZ operators get real value from it.
The catch isn’t that Bookme is bad. It’s that marketplace demand has a price — and if every booking arrives through a discounted, commission-bearing channel, that price quietly becomes your biggest cost. The fix isn’t leaving Bookme. It’s making sure it isn’t your only channel.
Bookme isn’t the only marketplace, either — newer local entrants such as See and Do NZ pitch themselves on lower commissions (it self-reports a flat 15%). The rate varies; the principle doesn’t: any commission paid on a guest who would have booked you direct is money you didn’t need to spend. Marketplaces are for the seats you couldn’t fill yourself.
What Bookme commission actually costs on a deal booking
Two things come off the top of a marketplace deal: the discount that attracts the buyer, and the commission on what’s left. Here’s an illustrative example.
Deal price
NZ$70
a NZ$100 experience listed at 30% off — the discount is what gets the click
Commission (illustrative)
~NZ$14
commission is typically 20%+ — applied here to the deal price for illustration; your agreement sets the exact rate and base
You receive
~NZ$56
roughly 56 cents in the dollar of your advertised price
The same guest booking direct on your website: pays NZ$100, and you keep the lot — NZ$0 in booking fees on GoodKeen, on any plan.
At ~NZ$56 back on a NZ$100 experience, a Bookme sale can still be worth it — if that seat would otherwise have sat empty. Where it hurts is when guests who would happily have paid full price find the deal instead. That’s the leak a direct channel plugs.
Bookme commission isn’t publicly listed and is set per agreement; 20%+ is the rate operators typically report, and the example above is illustrative only — check your own Bookme agreement for your exact terms. Card processing (Stripe) is charged separately by your payment provider.
When Bookme genuinely earns its keep
Used deliberately, the marketplace does three jobs your own website can’t do as well.
Spare midweek capacity
A Tuesday 2pm session that runs at half capacity costs you almost nothing extra to fill. Discounted revenue on a seat that was going empty is a win — list those sessions, not your Saturday sell-outs.
Discovery
Bookme browsers are actively looking for something to do. For a new or lesser-known operator, that shop-window effect is real marketing — the commission is, in effect, your customer-acquisition cost.
New audiences
Deal-hunters, last-minute planners and visitors passing through are audiences your own marketing may never reach. A first visit at a discount can become a full-price regular — if you give them a reason to book direct next time.
The strategy: own your direct channel, use Bookme for the gaps
Your direct channel is every path a guest can take to book with you at full price, with no commission: your website, your Google Business Profile, and your front counter. Make those paths effortless, and Bookme becomes what it’s best at — a tap you open when you have capacity to spare.
Your direct channel
- Your website — a booking widget embedded on your own site, so “Book now” means booked, not “call us”
- Your Google Business Profile — the first thing locals see when they search your name; point its link straight at your booking page
- A QR code at the counter — walk-ins and returning guests scan, book and pay on their own phone
- Full price, 0% fees — payments land in your own Stripe account; nobody takes a cut of the booking
Bookme’s job
- Fill the sessions you choose — quiet weekdays, shoulder season, last-minute gaps
- Introduce you to new guests — treat the commission as a marketing spend with a measurable return
- Not your default — guests who already know you shouldn’t need a marketplace (and a discount) to book with you
The goal over time is simple: a growing share of full-price direct bookings, with Bookme dialled up or down as your calendar needs it. You set the mix — not the marketplace.
The direct-channel playbook
Three moves, one afternoon of setup. Each one converts marketplace-found guests into direct ones.
Put a booking widget on your own website
Embed the GoodKeen widget on your existing site — your website stays yours, we just add the “Book now”. Guests see live availability, pick a timeslot, pay by card and sign the waiver in one go, at full price. Point your Google Business Profile and social bios at the same page so every search lands somewhere that can actually take the booking.
Sell gift cards direct
A gift card is a full-price booking that hasn’t picked a date yet — and it recruits a brand-new guest when it’s redeemed. GoodKeen gift cards are sold from your own booking page with no commission, and they’re valid for at least 3 years, in line with NZ’s gift-card law.
Turn Bookme guests into direct guests with a promo code
When a Bookme guest checks in, hand them a card: “Loved it? Book direct next time with code COMEBACK10.” A 10% direct discount costs you a fraction of a marketplace deal — the guest still gets a better price than full rate, and you keep the rest. QR check-in on their phone makes the handover moment easy to catch.
